Barbara coaches leaders to define their legacy by clarifying their values and aligning them with work and life to make a positive impact. Her ability to help people cut through their "noise" and laser into what is truly important in leading their organization results in a ripple effect from the leader's developing emotional/social intelligence and behaviors. When leaders are anxious, triggered, or burnt out, Barbara's somatic neuroexperiential approach to facilitating the calming of their nervous system, benefits not only the leader, but the relationships they have with others--at work and in their personal life.
Barbara’s portfolio career experiences give depth and range to the expertise she brings to her role as executive coach and organizational consultant. She studied marine biology, ecology, and psychology in college, during which time she counseled runaway youth and their families and Hispanic students getting ready to enter college. Her ten years at University of California at Berkeley, where she advised and advised thousands of senior research and faculty scholars from 81 countries, helped her develop a keen understanding of human and functional diversity.
In her role as editor-in-chief of a technology magazine, Barbara broadened her understanding of computer technologies. When she left this position, Apple Computer sought her out to bring her international and technological expertise to support its business launches in Latin America and the Far East. Executives at companies like Sandoz Pharmaceuticals and Blue Shield asked her to introduce new technologies and ways of working. She loved the challenge and continual learning involved with helping people develop their highest potential while transforming the way they work.
Since her first independent consulting engagements back in 1986, Barbara has developed and grown her expertise and trusted reputation by helping hundreds of executives and their teams increase their effectiveness and personal satisfaction. She earned credentials, including the Certified Management Consultant (CMC®) certification from the highly respected Institute for Management Consultants USA, whose Code of Ethics she adheres to strongly; coaching credentials from the Coaches Training Institute, TopHuman (China) and Stakeholder Centered Coaching (Marshall Goldsmith); facilitation from The Grove International and Community at Work; and mediation from the American Arbitration Association. She is certified in Sustainable Business Management and Green Building practices to support executives concerned about the impact of business practices on the environment and society. Her studies of the brain and body combined with her Certification as a Brainspotting Therapist complements the cognitive approaches she brings to coaching others.
Barbara was Adjunct Faculty at Advantara® Institute Coach Education and Development, co-hosted the International Coach Federation Global Executive Coaches SIG, hosted the Institute of Management Consultants NorCal East Bay Consultants Forum, and was a founding member of the Green Chamber of Commerce. She served on the board of directors at Berrett-Koehler Publishers and the advisory board for the Berkeley High School for Social Justice and Ecology. Over the years she has spoken about Embracing Change, Juggling Life, Family and Work, The Leadership Challenge and Change Your Thinking, Change Your Results. In 2007 she was an invited speaker about Leadership and Social Responsibility at the Beijing International Coaching Conference for Corporate Social Responsibility.
Today, Barbara is honored to serve a broad range of leaders who consider her a trusted advisor and thought partner as they address their dilemmas, enhance their leadership, build the effectiveness of their organizations, and define their legacy.

Testimonials

I was so impressed with you Barbara! - Jordan Bajor, COO, Gynesonics

Her holistic and results-focused approach makes her an important go-to advisor for leaders and organizations with a purpose-driven mission. It’s a pleasure to recommend her. - Larry Simi, CEO, Build It Green

Barbara Chan is uniquely capable of helping professionals move from where they are to the next level in their careers.  To cope with change and make our best contribution while navigating through organizations and networks, the key as always is emotional intelligence, the focus of Barbara’s work. The breadth of experience and wisdom she brings to helping clients become self-aware and effective means that her impact is not limited to any particular niche:  it is foundational for any field or professional challenge.  The work that I've done with Barbara helps me align my next steps with my purpose, my values, and the legacy I want to contribute through my work.  She has my highest recommendation. - Chris Lehman

You are able to empathize with different perspectives and that has helped me communicate better with my team. As a result I have become a more empathetic and hands-on manager. Plus, you have encouraged me to step back and build in time to look at the big picture, not just the details. You’ve given me very many good marketing ideas, and you’ve been generous in referring me to members of your network for help. You even got me into the habit of exercising, believe it or not, and I am sure that’ll add years to my life.

In all the time we’ve worked together, you have been unfailingly supportive of me and my vision for the company. I really appreciated that you can give constructive criticism and still have me know that you are “in my corner.” - Susan Grant, President, Senior Helpers

The Brainspotting session was so amazing. I felt totally peaceful after our first session and am no longer anxious about my career and life move. - Dr. SD, M.D.

The Brainspotting sessions helped me overcome blocks that I wasn't even aware of. I am happy to report that they helped me gain the confidence to deal effectively with situations that used to challenge me. Thank you! - G.S., J.D.
